John Hanson, upon the founding of the sovereign nation of United States of America on July 4th 1776, was made the first 1st President by the U.S. Congress under their first form of government - the Continental Congress. This ultimately resulted in Hanson's statue being one of two representing Maryland in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol, even though, according to historian Gregory Stiverson, Hanson was not one of Maryland's foremost leaders of the Revolutionary era. There is much debate about John Hanson's ancestry with one camp claiming he was descended from Swedish Royalty while the other group claiming he was a Moor.
